Chili pepper is a member of the nightshade family Solanaceae. They are fruits of Capsium Capsicum pepper plants, noted for their hot flavor.

They are many varieties of chili peppers such as Cayenne, Jalapenos, Serrano, Habanero, Carolina reaper, that are used in various cuisines. It is known for its strong, spicy flavor which is due to an active alkaloid compound called Capsaicin. The more of this capsaicin it contains, the hotter the pepper is and it also responsible for many of its health benefits.

Chili pepper are now grown around the world because they are widely used as food and medicine. It is the world’s second important vegetable, ranking after tomatoes. They are usually eaten fresh, dried, or powdered to flavor barbecue, hot curry and other spicy sauces.

Availability / Varieties:

Chili peppers are native to South and Central America but are now cultivated in warm climates around the world including Nigeria.

There are many varieties of chili pepper all over the world but many of them are produced based on regions and environmental conditions.

Varieties commonly produced in Nigeria are;

  1. Bird peppers – Ata Eye ( ) Var.Minima

This varieties is shot in length and very hot species. Ripe and unripe bird peppers are

used for preparing pepper sauces. This pepper is assumed to be the hottest pepper in Nigeria.

2 )Cayenne pepper or Red pepper – Sombo ( ) Var.Fingerh.

This is the most common type of pepper in Nigeria. It is also called Red Hot pepper or Guinea spice. Its main peculiarity is that it can be stored for a very long time in the form of powder. It is very long and thin. It is a bit mild as regards to its hotness.

3)Capsicum annum ( Var.Baccatum ) – Ata wewe.

This species is also common in the market. They are in various sizes and smaller ones seemed to be hotter than the bigger sized.

4)Capsicum annum ( Var.Chacoense ) – Tatase.

It is very mild in taste and very reddish in color.
